Ayam kampung @ Seri Petaling

Halal food is compulsory for Muslims especially food from livestocks that has to be slaughter in the name of Allah.

These days chicken is the most sought after fresh food apart from red meat and seafood. There has been issues of chicken being "adulterated" and tainted with chemicals that is being the reason why many had been having problems with modern diseases and especially cancer.

When we suspect that farm-bred chicken is the culprit, many attempt to replace it with 'ayam kampung'. This give rise to the emergence of Ayam Kampung Restaurants. Ayam Kampung is not easily found and the price is a bit high compared to farm-bred chicken.

In Seri Petaling there is a chicken seller peddling live ayam kampung and you can handpick your own chicken and it will be slaughtered and skinned on the spot. Therefore, freshness of the chicken is guaranteed.
You can find this in front of Mesjid Jamek Seri Petaling and SK Seri Petaling on Jalan Raden Anum.

MyAgro HyperMart

When I visited the Malaysian International Tourism Exchange at Malaysian Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS), I saw this hypermarket at Hall D of the Exhibition Area. It is the MyAgro Hypermart and is the first of its kind in Malaysia.

It is a one-stop centre for fresh produce and the latest innovations in processed foods and goods made from 100% local crops. It is highly attractive to both locals and foreigners as a “live display” centre with a huge collection of SMI products.

The hypermart is operated by MARDI and has a built up area of 8000 metre square and start operation since January 2012.

Pecel Lele For Dinner In Palembang

During the SEA Games 2011 in Palembang, I had the opportunity to savour another popular and cheap Indonesian cuisine known as Pecel Lele. We were taken by the Games ICT volunteers to a place but I couldn’t locate it. I check my Foursquare check-ins while in Palembang but it was not registered in my history. I think I can’t check in that night. Well, maybe its along Jalan Kolonel Hj Burhan. Anyway there are many pecel lele stalls in Palembang. The one we went has the banner Seafood Ayo Mampir Pecel Lele.

Pecel lele is a popular dish in Indonesia especially in Jakarta as it is an affordable food and as it seems is well balanced. There is carbohydrate, protein, vegetable and you gulp down a glass of warm or cold water.

The main ingredient of pecel lele is the ikan lele (its catfish or ikan keli in Malaysia) and the name of the dish arise from this. Ikan lele is deep fried and taken with rice. Side dish that came along the rice and ikan lele is the lalapan consisting of vegetables including sliced cucumber, kemangi leaves, long beans, tomatoes and cabbage. It might not include all the veges but most of it. then there is also a piece of fried soya bean curd. To add taste these is also the hot chili sambal and mashed tomato. To experience the best out of pecel lele, you must take it when the rice is still smokey warm.

Being a popular dish it is an alternative to chicken based food especially fried chicken.

Mi Celur of Palembang

When I was in Palembang for the SEA Games in 2011 I and my friend were taken to savour one of the local cuisine. We were told that the restaurant serves the best Mee Celur in Palembang. The food is quite similar to our Mee Rebus with yellow mee, bean sprouts and the thick gravy and topped with boiled egg, fried onions and chives.

The restaurant is just an ordinary small shop lot but based on the amount of yellow mee, the bean sprouts, a long Q of take away customer and the full house inside when we arrived, I think it is confirmed the Mi Celur can be the best in Palembang. Well, we have to stand and search for empty seat and when we found them, we still have to share with other diners who is halfway finishing their plate of Mi Celur. Breakfast, anyway.

If you think you want to cook this for your family or guest get the recipe HERE.

The restaurant if I am not mistaken is at Mi Celor 26 Ilir. After a heartful plate of Mi Celor for breakfast, we went to shop for local souvenir at Pasar 26 Ilir nearby. Location MAP

So, if you visit Palembang, do not miss to try this Mi Celur.

End Of A Feasting Month

At the time I post this blog, the holy month of Ramadhan this year is coming to an end. Muslims all over the world will be celebrating the Eid ul Fitr. It mark the end of the compulsory fasting month when every Muslim have to abstain from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk.

Ramadhan in Malaysia has become some sort of food fest with Pasar Ramadhan being set up in many places especially nearby communities to sell variety of food. kuih and drinks. During this month sonetimes we can find cakes (kuih) that were rarely found at other times. Varities of food is choiceless and people will find it difficult to make out their mind at all those delicuous food and the temptation increases after abstaining from eating the whole day.

Customers are not only Muslims who observing the fasting, but also other races who took the opportunity to saviour Malaysian dishes at their peak. That the specialty of having a multiracial soceity. I overheard a couple ladies whe were at a Pasar Ramadhan in Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur. "This is the beauty of Malaysia".

For tourist, Ramadhan can be identified as some of the better months to visit Malaysia because it is a feasting season.

Pak Lang & Family Corner

Wan Selera Kampung In Perlis

It was on my way back to Kuala Lumpur from Kangar when I decided to stop for lunch. Reached Simpang Empat. Local call it as Simpang Empat Tok Kassim. Who Tok Kassim is, I am not sure. We stop at this selera kampung stall at Simpang Empat. The stall is located opposite the Simpang Empat police station and in front of the public library. If you were to travel from Kangar, the stall is on the right just before the traffic light and the river.  The stall is Wan Selera Kampung. It is open from 10.00 a.m till late evening. But I think the best time to visit is during lunch hour because the food will be more fresh compared in late evenings.
Besides the ordinary shed, there are also small huts with attap roof that can sit 6 person. The attap create a cool environment inside.

Food served are self serviced and fresh. One reason is that Simpang Empat is located not far from the Kuala or estuary and locals are mostly fishermen. For that reason sea food here is fresh and you can taste the sweetness of it.
This guy's job is to prepare ikan bakar and served immediately. He will  grill the fish over charcoal fire.
The variety of dishes laid neatly on the table.

If westerners take raw vegetables as salad, Malaysians eat raw veges too. The difference is these are taken as ulam, dip in preparation of chilli and prawn paste or belacan. These local vegetables is believe to have some medicinal effects. There are choice of 'ulams' to bechosen from.
Varieties of fresh grilled fish to be chosen from.

One of the factor for good taste of curry is because it is cooked in clay pots over wood fire. Three dishes of curry to choose from.

LCCT Food Garden

Went to LCCT to send off my cousins who are flying back to Sabah. Did not park my car at the car park at LCCT but illegally on the road in front of the Pos Malaysia Cargo. Free of course.  On the way back, stop to have breakfast at the LCCT Food Garden. It is situated about 50 metres away from the terminal building. The place is quite comfortable compared to the outlets at the terminal where it is crowded especially at Asian Kitchen.
Below is the view inside the Food Garden, spacious and comfy. Here one can have the popular Nasi Campur, Nasi Padang and Nasi Kandar. For those who saviour KFC, can also satisfy your appetite at the Finger Lickin' Good outlet within the garden.
I ate this Nasi Padang with a piece of beef,  a piece of pergedil and some vegetable.
This is the bill
I think the price of food here is fair and quite cheap compared at the terminal.
