One in a while when one can get to eat fresh catch from the sea, it is the best choice not miss. Usually fresh food catch from the sea is available at places near the sea. One of the best place to experience fresh fish from the sea is at Kota Kinabalu, Kuala Perlis, Kuala Kedah, Kota Bharu, Kuala Terengganu, Kuantan to name a few.
If you visit Kota Kinabalu, don't miss the ikan bakar stall (fish grilled over charcoal fire) at the open market behind the so called Philipines Market (local don't want it to be called so). The market is open from evening till night and fresh fish are sold ad a reasonable price. Fresh vegetables and other village products can also be found.
At one end of the market there are stalls selling fresh grilled fish and it is eaten with rice. Just sit at one of the stalls and make your choice. Price is reasonable for something fresh.
Visitors can also buy shells for decorations

hi, nice article, but i think you got it wrong when you say locals dont want to call the market filipino market. It's been called that since its inception, more than 20 years ago, and no effort to change its name, infact its name gives it its identity, so not sure where you got that impression about our preference. thanks.
Thanks louisebah, first for visiting and most of all your reaction to the name. I was studying at Gaya College in Kota Kinabalu in 194-1975 and it was already called Pasar Filipina where we go and buy decorations made of sea shells. However I can't remember the exact location of the market.
I went to Kota Kinabalu in fact every year since 1996 for official assignment and on one occasion a local friend did remind me not to call it Philippine Market anc cll KK Market. Well, I just smile.
However, I agree that the name already has made an icon for Kota Kinabalu and visitors will try not to miss visiting this place for souvenirs.
It is a bit sad that the product there has been associated to and as Sabah souvenirs. I knoe it is produced locally but the 'art' is not Sabahans.
